I have wanted to read a book by Julia Alvarez for a long time now. I am so glad that I finally have. I just loved her style. I thought that In The Time of the Butterflies was a great book. I felt as though I really knew the sisters and feared for their lives. I found myself wanting to tell them to turn back when they went off for that last time. I wanted someone to help them when they were overtaken by the thugs who would kill them. Their voices came through so loud and clear in her writing. I hope that the rest of you enjoyed the book as well. I know it has a somewhat difficult narrative structure, and hopefully you were willing to persevere and get through it. Let me know what you thought about the book.

Mrs. Mac, I totally agree with what you said about the book. I'm just getting into books narrated in multiple voices and I just love the way Alvarez creates the distinct voices of the characters. What I especially liked, of course, was the mix of Hispanic culture and Spanish words within the story. It added some awesome flavor to the novel.

Michael,
The mix of Hispanic culture and Spanish words was a treat for me too. I should have had a Spanish dictionary handy, though. I would still like to know what a couple of words mean.

i thought that this book was really good! what i liked about it was the view of the goverment and how the people managed with all that against them. I also like the spanish. i was able to understand most of it and it was neat to have the spanish kind of go through the book in a sublte kind of way and not in your face. it was just somthing reminding you what kind of culture they are from cause if it was all english i think that i would find myself loosing the culture.
